Sorting and Grouping as Mathematicians and Scientists

In both math and science this past week, we have been working with sorting and grouping objects.  As mathematicians we examined how grouping large numbers of items helps us to count them in more efficient ways.  The kids worked with chick peas and raisins to first estimate totals and then came up with a way to easily calculate their totals.  They used available data to revise predictions as needed and then found a variety of ways to group their items.  While looking at these large numbers, we were able to identify them in three ways:
Standard Form  =  25
Word Form = twenty-five
Expanded Form = 20+5

As scientists we have been paying close attention to animals' behavioral patterns and physical characteristics through observation and sketching.  The kids worked in groups this past week to sort a given set of animals according to the set of characteristics that they chose.  They named each group and sorted them accordingly in order to create a poster to teach the class about their classification system.  Each group presented their poster to the class. This has brought us to the classification of vertebrate animals which we will study this week.

As readers and writers we have continued our work on memory stories.  We have used mentor authors to find ways to stretch and really develop small moments to grow our stories.  Most of the kids are working on their rough drafts currently.  As we begin to revise and edit this week, some of the kids will be bringing them home for assistance in this area.  We will do as much of this in class as possible, but some stories are longer than others and may need a little help at home. Thanks in advance for this.

This Coming Week

This coming week the kids will work in small groups to research five classes of vertebrate animals: fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.  Following this group research, the kids will each choose an animal they would like to know more about and conduct an individual research project in class.  We will continue moving through the writing process with our memory stories.  In math we will consider larger numbers and ways that they can be represented and broken down.

The kids worked in groups to decide how to sort a given set of animals into groups.

As mathematicians, the kids each worked with a box of raisins to estimate and and calculate the total number in their box.  They had to decide what was the best way to count a large groups of items.

Here is one of the final products from our collaborative animal sorting projects.  These classification posters were used to teach the class about the characteristics each group selected to define their classification groups.

Publishing, Insectigations, and Memories

Last week we celebrated each other as writers while publishing our first pieces.  From The Misplaced Plants to The Book of Emojis to Captain Pajama Pants, we had a wide range of truly unique topics.  Then we began planning and drafting our memory stories.  These narrative pieces will take us through the entire writing process from prewriting to rough drafts, then to revising and editing with someone, and finally to a published final draft.  Be sure to ask your child about the memory they have chosen to write about.  Talking with them will help them to develop more details in order to better tell their story.  We explored ways to sort and group numbers when adding to find the simplest solution for each mathematician.  As scientists,  we observed animals' traits and behaviors to begin thinking about classification.  Our Insectigations experience at Sesqui gave us the opportunity to do this with live insects.  We also continued to examine our thinking as readers through our author study on Eve Bunting.  Her powerful memory stories have also inspired us as writers.

This Coming Week

We will continue exploring the writing process as we work on our memory stories.  Much of writing efforts this week will focus on magnifying small moments to grow our stories and developing our settings using the five senses.  In science, we will  research the five classes of vertebrates and begin our animal group projects.  We will continue our inquiry into thinking as readers.  As mathematicians, we will continue investigating ways to sort and add numbers so that the process makes sense to each of us.

What a Day!

Last Monday, we began publishing our first writing pieces.  You would be amazed at how well spoken these authors were in presenting their work.  Many had the audience laughing out loud or gasping for more when they learned the ending was a cliffhanger.  Sadly, we had only just begun when the weather halted our progress. We will continue publishing this coming week.  Several friends brought in science specimens and news articles to share.  Though we had only one Morning Meeting, it was filled with new information and questions about space probes, endangered horses, and the Dumbo Octopus!  Please continue exploring current events and news with your children.  Many have already completed the minimum requirement for 1 news article and 1 journal entry by the end of September, and we are looking forward to the rest of those coming in to spur our discussions.

This Coming Week

Last week's blog  post contains most of what we will be doing this week so I won't repeat everything.  Our field study is Tuesday and we still need a couple of permission slips and payments.  Please send those in tomorrow.  Also, you might want to protect your child with some bug spray Tuesday morning.
** Lastly, if you are able, please send in a labeled Ziploc containing 20 pennies and 10 dimes for your child to use in math investigations.**

Our First Full Week

Our first full week was definitely a busy one. With the assistance of one very helpful mom in our classroom, we now have busy bird feeders hanging outside our window. The hummingbirds don’t seem to want their photos taken for some reason, but butterflies and caterpillars don’t mind at all! We brought a few inside to watch their transformation. Thanks again to the wonderful parents in our room for helping me keep these caterpillars fed. We could not do it without you.

To help launch our inquiry into animals, we hosted guest speaker, Gail Dawson, from Carolina Wildlife Care. She is also the illustrator of Squirrel On the Run, a book about volunteering at a wildlife rescue center. Ms. Gail introduced animal adaptations and classification while helping us explore the artifacts in our classroom. She then led a discussion about sketching with the eye of a scientist. Ms. Gail was so impressed with our students and their skills as inquirers, she asked if she could visit with us on a monthly basis!

Our class pet, Via the hamster, made her introduction to classroom this week. We became a little more familiar with her throughout the week. On Friday she was able to join our circle and the kids were amazing with her. Via made her first home visit with a classmate over the Labor Day weekend. Many of you have been asking about weekends with Via, so I will be sending out those dates that have been requested already.  Please send in a written note as permission for Via to come home with your student because this is much easier for me to keep up with than a mixture of emails and notes. We will share Via’s adventures in morning meeting tomorrow.

Speaking of morning meeting, we have begun sharing news and journals. Please involve your child in discussions about current events and news at home. You will often be surprised at the questions and perspectives they share. Remember they need to share at least one news article and one journal entry each month.

This Coming Week...

This week we will continue our inquiry into animals and will host another animal expert. We have completed MAP testing in reading and will complete MAP math on Wednesday afternoon. Please remember school pictures are tomorrow but we also have P.E. Pictures will be first thing in the morning and P.E. is at 10:00 so please send shoes/clothes to change into if needed. We will make our first trip to Sandhills library on Friday 9/7 and would love for you to meet us there if possible. We will leave the school right after lunch at 11:30.
